How to Mix Protein Powder in 16 oz of Water

Water first, then powder, then a real shake: ten seconds, no blender. Here's the technique that prevents clumps, sediment and foam in a water-based protein drink.

The method

  1. Start with 16 oz of cold water in a bottle or shaker with a secure lid. Cold water tastes better and modern water-based powders are built to dissolve in it.
  2. Pour the powder onto the water, not the other way around. A single-serve stick makes this foolproof; there's no scoop to level.
  3. Shake for 10 to 15 seconds with intent. Swirling with a spoon leaves the sediment layer that ruins the last third of the glass.
  4. Rest for 30 seconds if there's foam, then add ice. Foam settles fast in water-based formulas; dairy-based ones hold it longer.

If your powder fails these steps in plain cold water, needs a blender, stays gritty, tastes like dairy no matter the flavor, the format is fighting you. See protein powder for people who hate shakes for what to switch to.

Common questions

Why 16 oz of water?

It's the balance point most single-serve sticks are formulated around: enough water for a light, fully dissolved drink, small enough that the flavor stays bright.

Cold or room-temperature water?

Cold. It tastes dramatically better in water-based formulas, and modern powders are designed to dissolve in cold water, warm water can make some proteins clump or foam more.

Water first or powder first?

Water first. Powder poured onto water disperses as it sinks; water poured onto powder cakes it to the bottom of the bottle.
